Tips for Applying to the IU Ph.D. Program
Click here for a checklist for compiling application materials.
Know the deadlines
The application deadline is December 1st for international applicants, and December 15th for domestic applicants. Faculty will review applications and make admissions decisions in late February and early March. Offer and denial letters will be mailed in early March. If an interview is required, faculty will contact you directly to make arrangements. You have until April 15th to accept or deny an offer of admission.
Know the program and its areas
Before applying, be sure your area of interest is offered. Be aware that the program at IU is research-oriented, does not offer a degree in counseling and does not admit students for a master's degree.
Take the GRE early
We recommend taking the GRE before November 15th to insure that your scores are received by the deadline. At peak times, it can take up to five weeks to get scores from ETS. Remember that the General test is required for admission. The Subject test is not required, but strongly recommended. The Institution Code for IU is 1324, Departmental Code is 2016.
Financial aid
You will automatically be considered for financial support by submitting your application. You do not need to submit any additional materials to be considered for grants, fellowships and departmental assistantships.
Keep a copy of your application
Always a good idea so you know exactly what you submitted, and can easily refer to it if a faculty member has a question.
Mail all items together
Make every effort to send in your application as one complete packet. Your application will not be reviewed if items are missing. You may self-collect your transcripts and letters of recommendation (in sealed envelopes), and send them with the rest of your materials. Mail your completed application directly to the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences.
Online application
If you decide to apply online (the preferred method), be sure you press "submit" when you have completed your portion of the application. The department cannot review an application until it is submitted. You may also self-collect letters and transcripts with this option and mail them to the department along with your application fee.
International applications
Send all original supporting application materials to International Admissions, 300 N. Jordan Ave., Bloomington, IN 47405. All questions regarding the completeness of your file should also be directed to International Admissions.
University Graduate School
Do not send any application materials to the University Graduate School, this will delay the processing of your application.
