Get Active Outside the Classroom
Why participate in activities on campus and in the community? All undergraduate students - of any major - simply must do more than fulfill degree requirements if they want to be prepared for a career or graduate school when they graduate. Why participate in co-curricular activities?
- Personal growth: You can develop the transferable skills desired in any profession (communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and developing goals and achieving them) by participating in student groups, volunteering, or taking on a part-time job or internship.
- Network with students: Participating in student groups connects you to others with similar interests and allows you to share information about classes, research opportunities, student groups, internships, careers and more.
- Explore career options: Volunteering, part-time jobs, and internships all allow you to work with different organizations to discover one that you enjoy so much that you decide to pursue a career in that area.
- Network with professionals: If you commit volunteer time to an organization and take on leadership roles, you might open a doorway for an internship or a part-time job. Interacting with people who work full-time in an area can help you find a full-time position after graduation.
- Get experience: Internships and career-relevant part-time jobs and volunteer work allow you to acquire specialized knowledge for a particular field.
- Acquire language skills and/or demonstrate adaptability and resourcefulness by participating in a study abroad program.
