Cognitive Psychology is at the center of modern-day psychology, the scientific study of the mind or brain. The job of a cognitive psychologist is to infer the workings of the mind¿an essentially unobservable entity¿based on observable behavior or on observable patterns of neural activity in the brain (the latter being an increasingly common approach). Cognitive psychology is the study of how people perceive, process, remember, and use information. Some of the topics that we will address in this course are brain imaging, neural networks, computational models, object recognition, perception, attention, executive control, and short- and long-term memory. We will survey each of these fields in this course, but we also plan on going into greater depth in several areas and review in detail some current debates within Cognitive Psychology.
