This course serves as an introduction to Clinical Psychological Science - a scientific field that uses empirical research to promote mental health and reduce human suffering. This course broadly focuses on using rigorous, experimental methods to inform the classification, diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of a variety of mental health disorders. Core course topics include bridging the scientist-practitioner gap (e.g., failure of practitioners to use evidence-based treatment in their therapies, and the failure of researchers to include important practice-based elements into their research studies), distinguishing between science-based interventions and pseudoscientific treatments, the importance of evidence-based assessment, evaluating the effectiveness of evidence-based treatments, and improving dissemination and implementation strategies so real-world clients suffering from mental health disorders can benefit from the most effective treatments available.
