IU researchers potentially discover new way to block brain’s reward response to opioids

PBS researchers, led by Professor Andrea Hohmann, collaborated with Northeastern University chemists to test a drug candidate that was previously developed to treat alcohol addiction. Their findings show a new potential way to reduce the addictiveness of opioids without reducing their therapeutic aspects.

Shaping NextGen Academia

At the suggestion of Ph.D. student Tobi Abubakare, Director of Graduate Studies Karin James formally established a PBS connection to the NextGen Psych Scholars Program, an online mentorship program for underrepresented students interested in pursuing Ph.D.’s in psychological and brain sciences across the U.S.

Digital screening tool may help hospitals identify mental health problems

A new study by PBS researchers has found that about 45% of patients who visit the emergency department for physical injuries and ailments also have mental health and substance use problems that are often overlooked. It also found that patients who reported high levels of suicidal thinking and plans were more likely to have frequent emergency department visits.

Race and Facial Perception: A $500,000 NSF grant supports a PBS project to “de-bias” facial perceptions

By measuring the way racism informs facial perception, a new study seeks to expose – in ourselves and our algorithms – racist judgments at the level of facial perception.
