Professors Mary Murphy and Victor Quintanilla have been named Schmidt Futures Innovation Fellows, the first at IU to hold this honor. With the support of Schmidt Futures, they are striving to provide greater equity and access to justice in the legal experiences of marginalized people.
PBS researchers, led by Professor Andrea Hohmann, collaborated with Northeastern University chemists to test a drug candidate that was previously developed to treat alcohol addiction. Their findings show a new potential way to reduce the addictiveness of opioids without reducing their therapeutic aspects.
At the suggestion of Ph.D. student Tobi Abubakare, Director of Graduate Studies Karin James formally established a PBS connection to the NextGen Psych Scholars Program, an online mentorship program for underrepresented students interested in pursuing Ph.D.’s in psychological and brain sciences across the U.S.
A new study by PBS researchers has found that about 45% of patients who visit the emergency department for physical injuries and ailments also have mental health and substance use problems that are often overlooked. It also found that patients who reported high levels of suicidal thinking and plans were more likely to have frequent emergency department visits.
By measuring the way racism informs facial perception, a new study seeks to expose – in ourselves and our algorithms – racist judgments at the level of facial perception.

We hosted a welcome event for Direct Admits into our majors for undergraduates as well as an ice cream social for new graduate students to get to know one another. Take a look at budding friendships that were started at these events!
PBS students played games and did demonstrations with Bloomington-area children to teach the basics of the psychological and brain sciences.
We hosted five PBS alumni at the Indiana Memorial Union for a dinner and ceremony. This event was preceded by a poster session where graduate students shared the latest data from their research.
